There is a Valentine’s Day dance at school, and Merci reluctantly agrees to run a photo booth (on the condition that she won’t have to set foot on the dance floor). Merci is in the unfortunate position of trying to make lots of different people happy, and as a result losing her own sense of self. The high expectations of her parents and her teachers are weighing heavily on her as well, and she is frustrated that sometimes the responsibilities she has at home (chores, helping care for Lolo, and watching her twin cousins) keep her from being able to socialize with her friends. At school, she is having a very difficult time maintaining her truce with her mortal enemy Edna she continues to struggle with being one of the few students of color at her private school and she’s confused about how she feels about her new friend Wilson. On the home front, her grandfather Lolo’s health is declining her Tia Ines is behaving rather mysteriously and Merci misses her brother Roli who has left for college. Merci, now in 7th grade, has a lot of worries – some old and some brand new. What did you like about the book? The heroine of Newbery Medal-winning Merci Suárez Changes Gears is back, and so is her warm and loving Cuban American family. ![]() Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 5 ![]()
